For the D’DAYS round table, chaired by Chantal Hamaide – director and editor-in-chief of the magazine Intramuros – several figures from the world of industry, design and cultural institutions are invited to debate the theme “And tomorrow”. Several problems will be raised: the role of designers in the company faced with changes in markets and the recognition of their status, new technologies and their impact on manufacturing methods. For manufacturers, the debate will focus on the question of the position of companies on a world market with emerging countries. Does European excellence exist? Is the company’s independence a guarantee of the brand’s spirit and its success? Are emerging markets going to save European companies? In this context, are luxury crafts able to provide a differentiating qualitative identity? A host of questions which will be considered at this round table and which will provoke a lively and fascinating debate about what design will be tomorrow. Round table realised thanks to the kind support of Bettencourt Schueller Foundation.

The Skills Academy Call for applications: 1 May to 15 July 2013. The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès is launching its first Skills Academy in 2014, with designer Patrick Jouin as guest director. The first academy will explore the medium of wood. Applications are open to artisans, designers and engineers committed to transmitting core skills in a context of ground-breaking experiment and innovation. Call for applications The Academy is open to professionals of all ages. Five designers, five engineers and ten master artisans will be selected to take part, under the supervision of designer Patrick Jouin. The first session in 2014, entitled Xylomonia! Applications are invited from 1 May to 15 July 2013, and the programme will launch in January 2014. Why a Skills Academy? The Fondation d’entreprise Hermès has established its new Skills Academy to accompany the skills and expertise of artisans and creative designers in the context of a forum for innovation and new ideas. The biennial event is dedicated to the transmission of specialist artisan skills and best practice, and their relevance to other sectors, notably design and engineering. Conceived as an ‘ideas lab’ for knowledge-sharing and innovation, the Academy explores creative, sustainable design for tomorrow’s world. The programme During the first semester, participants attend a series of lectures and master classes by noted French or international personalities from the worlds of design, artisanship, engineering or research.
René-Jacques Mayer, President of the Association D’DAYS Designer’s Days is a wonderful enterprise, in all senses of the word, because it federates values, cultural and economic stakeholders, men and women for whom design is not a question. For each one, whether a member or partner of Designer’s Days, design is a profession, a discipline, an economic and creative added-value, a strategic function of development which we must carry unfailingly. For Designer’s Days, this year called D’DAYS, we have a dream. That D’DAYS maintains the sole watchword “Design, Design, Design!” because the object of what it is defending is itself so rich that serving it well, without losing ourselves in other areas, is more than enough to keep us busy. That “the design(s)”, which, in French, we do not classify, are all represented, whether graphic design, textiles, materials, objects, industrial or services. That D’DAYS is a platform for creation, where we can find installations, scenographies, commissions, exhibition curators, who exchange their viewpoints, their visions, their ways of seeing, all the stakeholders of this discipline, and, why not, others, more removed, from other sectors of contemporary creation. That D’DAYS generates a debate, political, economic and personal positions. That D’DAYS plays this role as a ferryman between economic and cultural stakeholders who live and breathe design, in the relationship between schools and companies, designers and backers, museums with national and international economic powers. Maybe you will see that, with this 2013 event, part of this dream has been pursued and realised, or not. Valérie Enlart, the new Vice–President, Alain Lardet, Honorary President and Board Member, the D’Days Board of Directors and its operational team invite you to join us now and in the future for one thing, and one thing only: ask for the programme … RJM

Fondation d’entreprise Hermès Since its creation in 2008, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès has worked to promote new outlets and applications for skills, expertise and innovation. Projects supported by the Foundation fall into two categories: ‘expertise and creativity’, and ‘expertise and the transmission of artisan skills’. From the outset, the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès has supported design as a key aspect of the contemporary creative scene. The Foundation organises the annual Prix Emile Hermès international design competition, aimed at promoting the talents of young design professionals. Participants are invited to design the objects of tomorrow, on a specified theme, with a special focus on eco-friendly production and distribution, and the transmission of the manufacturing and industrial skills used in the making of the design. The Foundation regularly supports a range of design-oriented initiatives, including Design Parade at the Villa Noailles in Nice, and the Bourse Agora pour le Design (Agora Design Grant). Furthering this commitment, the Foundation is delighted to support the programme of talks and roundtables at this year’s D’DAYS festival, encouraging debate on the future of design today.

“And tomorrow…”, two words and an ellipsis on which the participants of the D’DAYS circuit have been reflecting over the past few months. Choosing a theme for the year raises thousands of questions… How to formulate what is likely to be appropriate in nine months time? How, at the dawn of 2013, is it possible to imagine where companies and individuals will be once we have turned the page on this year? At a time when all economic indicators call for caution and moderation, at a time when there is a great temptation to withdraw, D’DAYS aims to open up new perspectives. In defiance of the gloomy context, for its 13th edition, D’DAYS is confirming its status as a festival and a catalyst for ideas. The expression “And tomorrow…” when applied to design expresses progress, innovation, evolutions in our everyday actions, even change. Tomorrow is a social motor. It is the unknown which leads us to question things and forces us to progress. The designer, trained to reply to consumption problems, will not create “extra” objects or services for the future. When taking on the role of designer in 2013, “for tomorrow” implies taking responsibility for creating actions, habits, objects which are exemplary in their production cycle, which will not involve any risk – even passive – for their users, and which will offer an “end of life”, to use the established expression, which is sustainable. The need for the world of tomorrow does not, ultimately, appear to be about inventing the “newest thing possible”, but, instead is about offering alternative solutions, ideas for a better life together. And, that is where design concerns much broader spheres than those naturally attributed to it. Indeed, in real terms, buying a sofa or a car and being able to say that it … Continue reading →

for young designersDesigner’s Days Designer’s Days is a non-profit organisation (French law of 1901). The Designer’s Days Association was founded in 2000 by a small group of professionals with the aim of making contemporary creative work better known and promoting modern design among the general public. For 12 years now, the Association has been offering a 5-day Parisian design circuit, where its member companies and partners open their doors and present an intriguing series of set designs created in collaboration with contemporary designers. Every year, participants present a highly cultural programme, based on a unified theme where the keyword is quality – all aimed at enhancing the products on display and providing an insight into the discipline of design. The public is invited to visit various venues in Paris such as showrooms, shops, schools, museums, etc. which offer a wide range of activities free of charge. The programme features conferences, workshops, studios and exhibitions. The Association, its support from Institutions, its Members The Designer’s Days Association is supported by the Paris Municipality as well as the Ministry of Culture and Communication and the Ministry of the Economy and Finance. The Association’s members are firms with top-level expertise using contemporary designers to develop their products. They have a location in Paris where the public can come and discover the scenography created for Designer’s Days where everyone involved works together all year round to put on this event. These include: Hermès, Baccarat, Saint Louis, Kartell, Cassina, B&B Italia, Roche Bobois and others. Young designers & Designer’s Days Enhancing young creation is one of the fundamental missions of Designer’s Days as borne out by: - the very high involvement of art schools at the Paris design circuit every year (ENSAD, Camondo, ENSCI, Ecole Boulle, Ecole Bleue, Parsons Paris School of Art and Design, … Continue reading →

The theme for 2012 The theme of the Designer’s Days circuit is a surprising choice. And yet to talk about Identity (ies) in the plural is to admit the complexity, the paradoxes and the richness of an individual, an object, or a brand. Considered thus, with its “ies” in brackets, the theme of the Paris Design circuit in 2012 opens up some interesting perspectives. Over and above the images which hark from the birthplace of the participants, echoing their roots, and their history, this plural of the word reminds us of the genesis of a product, or in the development of a brand, nothing is ever a foregone conclusion. If one usually knows where something originates from (the famous DNA of a brand which forges its identity), it is hard to bet on the direction that it might take. How are choices made which determine the identity of brands throughout the course of their production and life cycle? This plural, this bracket yielded to the unknown, is the delta which a company leaves to the designer at the moment when it commissions a project. The company provides a brief, with specifications.. but is also expecting a surprise. The purpose of design should be to comply absolutely with the constraints of industry, production limitations, or distribution needs, and must also be surprising, captivating… and perennial… a Utopia steeped with realism at the end of the day. Thus, the identity (ies) embodied in “design” objects, are those which are intermingled with brands and designers. This is also linked to future buyers who identify themselves with these objects. The latter becomes the mirror that reflects the values of a brand, the invention of the designer, and the emotions of the buyer. Talk about Identity (ies), and you talk about design. Designer’s Days from … Continue reading →
